ABOUT

J & D maternity home is a private health institution which is located in northern Tanzania near lake Eyasi, it is 50 km away from Karatu district, at the Qandend village. This health center also borders with other institutions like Qandend secondary school, Tindiga tented camps, and Ana gamazo high school

Background:

A  critical need exists: access to safe and skilled maternal care. Every expectant mother deserves a healthy pregnancy and a safe delivery, yet far too many women in this vibrant community face significant barriers – long distances to healthcare facilities, limited resources, and the anxieties of navigating pregnancy without adequate support.

we are establishing a nurturing and empowering maternity home in Lake eyasi, karatu District. This will be more than just a medical facility; it will be a beacon of hope, a place where mothers feel safe, respected, and receive the comprehensive care they need to bring new life into the world. We aim to build upon Jeannette and David’s dedicated researchers, a book writer, and environmental conservationists who lived in this area from 1984 to 2003. During their time here, they actively supported the community in various ways, leaving a lasting positive impact.  our maternity home will be a community hub where women feel safe, supported,  dignified and informed throughout their pregnancy journey, fostering healthy beginnings for both mother and child, and continuing the legacy of care they championed.

We aim to create a welcoming environment where women receive comprehensive antenatal care, skilled birth attendance, postnatal support, and crucial health education, all while being treated with dignity and respect. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving experienced midwives, local women’s groups, and potentially traditional birth attendants, all united by the vision of providing culturally sensitive and high-quality care that addresses the unique needs of expectant mothers in lake eyassi, while honoring the foundational support provided by individuals like Jeannette Handby and David Bygott
